Neurosurgery Survival Guide app for iPhone and iPad - now Android, too!
The Neurosurgery Survival Guide, by Neil Round, MD, is a quick reference, high-yield guide that encompasses that massive breadth of knowledge and information necessary to care for neurosurgical patients. This is the ideal reference for all neurosurgical residents, interns, medical students and all other mid-level practitioners that will encounter and care for neurosurgical patients (Nurse practitioners NP, and Physician Assistants PA). Ideal for all people working the neurointensive care units.
There are over 60 unique topics covered in this guide. Any new content is updated continuously and free of charge each time the application is opened, thereby keeping all material up-to-date with the latest in practice recommendations.
This guide has everything from the Complete Neurologic exam, rapid reference to many protocols, a 'what-to-do' guide when encountering many of the common neurosurgical conditions', all aspects of Neurocritical care, common neurosurgical procedures, a pediatric section and trauma. There is even a section for learning which includes high-yield neuroanatomy, cavernous sinus anatomy, spinal cord, functional neurosurgery, and neuroimaging.
Includes dozens of unique high-quality graphics and illustrations done professionally.
This is the definitive neurosurgery rapid reference for the iPhone.

Handbook of Neurosurgery (Greenberg) New 7th Edition
I am pleased to announce that the 7th edition of the Handbook of Neurosurgery by Mark S. Greenberg ((c) 2010) is currently in press. If everything goes well, it should be available by early to mid March 2010. The retail price will be $99.95 U.S.
My goal has always been to try and create a book in which one could quickly look up information to help with managing neurosurgical patients, as well as to answer important neurosurgical questions (one of my early inspirations occurred in my residency during Grand Rounds, when Frank Mayfield asked what was the blood supply to the spinal cord, and we all sank into our seats hoping not to get called on!).
New or improved features in the 7th edition include:
- color illustrations for some anatomy and surgical diagrams
- color highlights throughout the book to improve readability
- basic surgical procedures (this is not a surgical atlas!)
- more management specifics (blunt carotid injuries, stroke...)
- Booking the Case: information to help jog the memory about what is needed for scheduling an operation and what to put in the consent, for over 30 different operations. I would love to get feedback regarding how useful this is, and for ways to improve it
- TLICS & SLIC fracture grading scales
- summaries of management guidelines for NPH and cervical spondylotic myelopathy
- the use of endovascular techniques has been expanded in applicable sections
I am also planning on having some giveaways in the coming weeks (some free T-shirts and free books). Here is my legal disclaimer for that: I will be giving away some T-shirts and some books in the coming weeks. I reserve the right to give away as much free stuff as I feel like, and the giveaways will be arbitrary and totally unfair. No purchase is necessary. Void where prohibited. There is no obligation on my part to give anything to any particular individual, so please don't even bother bringing legal action against me or Greenberg Graphics. This promotion is being done by me as an individual independently of Thieme Medical Publishers, without their involvement, so leave them alone. I will announce in this forum and on my Twitter feed (see below) when the free giveaway promotion is over.
I have set up a Twitter feed for anyone interested in the progress of the book and giveaways as well as any activity related to the development of an electronic version of the book. Subsribe to neuroblade1 on twitter for the latest information.

Questions and Answers Regarding the 2009 Neurosurgical Residency Match Process
This link is probably not so helpful for most of you out there, but for the younglings:
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors’ reception on:
Monday, September 22, 2008
5:30 - 7:00 pm
Plaza Ballroom H
Peabody Hotel
Orlando, Florida
This year’s keynote speaker will be
Dr. Mark Shaffrey
Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery
University of Virginia Health Sciences Center
“Head Injuries in Sports”
This will be a great opportunity to network with Tumor Section leadership, enjoy a relaxed evening, and get involved with Tumor Section activities. Busses will also be available for those planning on attending the President’s Dinner afterwards.
Drs. James K. Liu and Ronald I. Apfelbaum (University of Utah) were kind enough to donate this video presentation of an odontoid resection via the transoral route. This is a great introduction to the transoral approach to the craniovertebral junction. This was made for the AANS and used here with permission.

Videos!
We have a real video to watch in the multimedia section. It's just a silly thing I slapped together. There is no audio. See if it works!

CSS!!
For anyone who really cares, UncleHarvey is now CSS-savvy! For the most part, cosmetics are now consistent throughout the site.
I'm going to be upgrading the "Cases" area in the next couple of weeks to make it a bit more interactive. Contact me if you have a case you want to add.
Best of luck in the match!
(PS: I'm glad I'm not you.)

Updates in progress…
Site updates are in progress. A lot of it is bringing the site up to date with current web standards and hopefully streamlining and reducing load times. The bookstore is new. Support us by buying stuff from amazon by using our page. More new features are in store. You may see pages change in front of your eyes as we update the site or stuff might not even work. Do not be alarmed.

Still alive?
Yes, we're actually still here, just too busy to do anything. I have some cases I'll throw up next week as well as some "new and exciting" (not) stuff. If I have time, that is.
