RUNN Course
Posted: 29 July 2008 08:03 AM

For those of you who have been to the RUNN course, how was it?

The course seems long, 8AM to 9PM every day for a week.  Was it worth the 7-day commitment?

Would you go again or recommend it to other residents?

Thank you.

Listen...The RUNN course is for people interested in research, particularly basic science research.  Period.

If you are interested in spine surgery or clinical research...don’t go.  You’ll hear people slander spine surgery multiple times during the course.  There we people presenting saying outlandish things like “we’ll cure aneurysms in the next 20 years...” Right.  Genetics of cavernous malformations are interesting...just not for two hours.

However, at about 5:00pm they roll out a keg of Harpoon and Sam Adams and uncork several bottles of wine between sessions...Morning/Lunch/Breakfast buffet.  Excellent clam chowder.

You stay in basically dorm rooms.  Bed, desk, shower, shitter, phone.  No cable.  BRING A LAPTOP.

Friedman gets extremely annoying during the course, requiring you to sign in for each session...pestering you to ask more questions at the end of each session.  How freaking old are we again?

Captain Kids is a good bar/eatery within walking distance.  If you looking for nocturnal billiards, best be prepared to drive about 7 miles (I can’t remember the name of the place).  Watch out for stop signs and cops.

Lot of people were into running (including Friedman and Dempsey) during the course.  There’s a baseball field about 5 blocks away if you can dig up a few people to bring gloves to play catch.

The course is very intellectual.  No argument there.  There is alot of informal down time between sessions to schmooze with some well know researchers and pick their brains.

Don’t attend this course as a board review course however.

Oh my god. It actually happened. A honest, informative, reasonable response to an honest, reasonable question on UH.

There is hope for this site.

The only bar with a pool table that we could find was a place called “Grumpy’s” which was about 5-7 miles away as the previous poster had mentioned.

Definitely a Good Will Hunting crowd hanging out there, and I don’t mean Field’s Medal winners.

I thought it was worth going (besides the obvious chance to hear about ongoing neuro-related research projects):

1. You meet your fellow residents around the country, and a great chance to network and meet your colleagues
2. No call.  You sleep all night.  Boston is 1.5 hours away.
3. Had a great time.
