Any suggestions for a good, introductory book for an aspiring neurosurgeon? I had neuroscience as an undergrad, but that seems like forever ago…
Thanks.

are you looking for a textbook or a something like a book of stories describing what life as a surgeon is like?

Something along the lines of an introductory textbook. Something I could read for background info before I meet with my mentor.

Thanks David. I definitely wasn’t planning on reading anything cover-to-cover, I just thought it might be good idea to read something before/after watching a particular surgery. Primarily for curiosity’s sake. Thanks for the idea…

Actually, the book I lent David was Rahul Jandial’s _Neurosurgical Essentials_ ; Henry Aryan and Peter Nakaji are co-authors. Although by no means definitive, it’s a quick read and will get you up to speed on most of the critical issues of many of the major disease processes treated by neurosurgery. It also has a brief primer on reading radiographs. Copies can be had on Amazon for $30; it’s a pricey $50 new. Hope this helps.

Another option is “Neurosurgery: An Introductory Text” by Black and Rossitch.
ISBN 0-19-504449-5
It’s not the most up to date, unless there’s a new edition I don’t know about, but it’s
quick and easy and the basics haven’t changed much.
