Does one have to do research in academics? Becuase, I would like to do cranial work, which means I basically have to go into academics. However, I don’t like research at all. I would rather spend time in the OR than behind a desk doing research. So, is it possible to do none?
It’s tough to find cranial-only academic jobs with no research interest. At many places the brain tumor guys in particular are in the lab a lot. The exception is endovascular: the reimbursement is great and there aren’t many out there. So a lot of departments are looking for and open/endo guy without much concern about research.
This is changing. I’m currently looking for a job in this and I find it a bit more disappointing than I had imagined. The problem is two-fold:
1) Most places have an existing (and very territorial) interventional neuroradiologist. When I interview at some of these places you get the feeling you’re going to be the radiologist’s bitch.
2) Because you’re a neurosurgeon as well, the life is a combination of both vascular/critical care neurologist combined with neurosurgeon. Expect to be on perpetual call for ever and ever, and ever. Much more so than the INR guy, because he can always claim to not have any patient management/critical care experience.
