INTRODUCTION

Located in the beautiful city of Portland, OR, OHSU sits atop a hill overlooking Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. Indeed a good environment for completing thesis and other school requirements. The program is a seven year program (see below for specifics) during which you cover neurosurgical service in three hospitals: the University Hospital, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and the VA Hospital.  Two residents are taken through the match each year.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

PGY-1: six months of general surgery rotations, three months of neurology, one month of ER, one month of neurosurgery, and one month of neuroanesthesia.
PGY-2: twelve grueling months of junior residency, during which you cover the ICU, ED and trauma consults, inpatient consults, the wards, resident clinic.
PGY-3: a year for research, as well as your neuroradiology and neuropathology rotations.  Residents during this year also participate in the Human Investigations Program course, an NIH-funded course instructing clinician researchers.  Residents also spend three months on the endovascular service.
PGY-4: six months pediatric neurosurgery, six months as the chief resident at the VA, where you see it all: spine, cerebrovascular, tumor, CSF diversion, etc.
PGY-5: 12 months of operating as the senior resident on the University Hospital service.
PGY-6: one full year protected from all clinical duties: no call, no cases, just research.
PGY-7: 12 months of cherry picking cases and running the show.

CALL
